James D. Noteware is Chairman & CEO of Noteware Development and Noteware Advisors. The current real estate downturn is the third cycle in which Mr. Noteware has been involved in the re-structuring, workout and turn-around of distressed real estate. He began his career in the first cycle as a real estate management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton performing workouts for New York based money-center banks. During the early stages of the second cycle, beginning in the mid-1980’s, as National Director of Real Estate for Laventhol & Horwath and Price Waterhouse, he assisted major developers and large financial institutions with the workouts of major assets and portfolios across the country. In 1990, he founded Houston-based Phoenix Consulting / PCI Financial, which became the largest contractor to the FDIC/RTC in the resolution and disposition of failed depository institutions and their portfolios of non-performing loans and ORE. In 1993, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Maxxam Property Company, the first purchaser of an RTC portfolio, where he directed the turn-around and eventual liquidation of hundreds of millions of dollars of commercial and residential properties throughout Texas. Currently, in this, his third cycle, he is working with developers and lenders of distressed assets, as well as advising investors on the acquisition of assets and portfolios.
Mr. Noteware received a Bachelor of Science from Stanford University in Civil Engineering and Architecture, and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was recognized as “Real Estate Professional of the Year” by Price Waterhouse, and in 1994, under Mr. Noteware’s leadership, Maxxam was awarded the 1994 Legacy Award for “Development of the Year”, the Sam Houston Race Park, a $100 million project which went from ground-breaking to opening in only ten months. He has been a life-long Member of the Urban Land Institute where he served as Chairman of the Houston District Council from 1996 through 2000. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Roundtable, and the Homer Hoyt Institute, dedicated to real estate education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is a member of the Young Presidents Organization.
